Katumi dropped out of school when she was 13 to work as a street porter to earn money so she could return to school.
Directed by the Academy Award-winning director of Born into Brothels and edited by Emmy nominated director, Jeremiah Zagar, Street Porter is the story of Katumi who worked for six months carrying heavy loads on her head. At night she slept in a tiny room with ten other girls in the city's slum. Now - back in school - she hopes that one day she will be able to return to the city where she worked to help other street porters to go back to school.
Street Porter is part of the 'Every Child Belongs in School' film series. Released as part of Camfed's 2010 Christmas appeal, the series aims to raise awareness of the fact that millions of children are deprived of an education and money to support children to go to school.
These short films serve as a grim reminder that education provides the only escape for the millions of children living in poverty.
