Housegirl will tell the story of girls trafficked into domestic service and drive a campaign to help stop the trafficking of vulnerable children.
Told through the eyes of twelve year old Winnie, our heroine is a bright, spirited girl from a rural village in Africa. Unable to pay her school fees, she accepts a job as a domestic servant in the capital city. Once there she loses all contact with her family, becoming a virtual child slave. Locked up in her employer's house, she is forced to work 18 hours a day with no pay. Her only escape is into her world of make-believe.
To be directed by Academy Award-winning Director, Ross Kauffman (Born into Brothels, 2005), this film will raise awareness of the abuse that girls often endure as domestic servants. The social change strategy will be led by multi-award winning charity, Camfed, which supports girls' and young women's advancement in sub-Saharan Africa.
Globally, child domestic workers constitute one of the most common forms of child labor in the world and they are also considered to be one of the most vulnerable.
